For the past 2 weeks I have been doing a training called "Thinking Math". When I first started the training I did not really understand what Thinking Math was but by the end I thought it was a wonderful course. Thinking Math teaches you different ways to solve problems and really makes you see how important it is for your students to have a STRONG number sense. Also, it taught me that I need to show my students multiple ways to solve problems and that my students don't have to use the same strategy. Engaging young children in conversations about how they "see" sets of number is a great way to start. One day in class we were talking about the Part, Part, whole model and that it is difficult for students to understand Part, Part Whole so I made a visual to help my students.
I had an Ah Hah movement when I was in Wal-Mart yesterday and found a good find.
I went home and monogrammed them so that I can use them in small groups or centers.

I teach 4th grade and we use a program called Think Math. Is that the same one you use? It was tricky to get started with it... especially because it was the kids first time using it too, but I really liked it by the end of the year.
