Tracking Student's Progress

This year in my district they are very big on tracking students progress. Sometimes it feels like we have way too much paperwork, but I love to look at one sheet of paper and see "at a glance" how a student has progressed during the year. And it's easy to show parents the growth their child has made or the growth they need to make!
I realized I needed an easy way for my students to be able to track their own progress that was age appropriate. We give reading Image It! test and Spelling Test every Friday and then Math test whenever we finish the unit. I wanted an easy way for my students to be able to look at their test and track their progress. I think it will help me keep track of their progress and I plan on sharing this with parents at student progress meetings. I have been using the data folders for 3 weeks now and my students love it. They always ask can I fill out my data sheet!!!! It makes me so happy when they do a little dance to show that there data bar moved up. Pictures of my students graphing their data are coming......If you want to buy this unit please click on the pictures below!!!

Trying to get better

Life has been so busy with teaching 1st grade for the 1st time and being in grad school. I feel like all I do is work work work... We have been learning about habitats in our classroom. My students loved learning about habitats. We made a classroom tree and the students brought in animals to go in our tree. This week we are going to be learning all about Community Helpers. This week we are also voting on who we think should be President, Duck, Grace or Mrs. Williams. I am going to post pictures this week!!! Have a great Monday

Lets see how I feel in December :) I have such a wonderful class and FSU football has started :) Grad school is killing me, this semester I am taking 1 class for 16 weeks and have to have 120 hours observing my Principal and AP.

Thinking Math !!

For the past 2 weeks I have been doing a training called "Thinking Math". When I first started the training I did not really understand what Thinking Math was but by the end I thought it was a wonderful course. Thinking Math teaches you different ways to solve problems and really makes you see how important it is for your students to have a STRONG number sense. Also, it taught me that I need to show my students multiple ways to solve problems and that my students don't have to use the same strategy. Engaging young children in conversations about how they "see" sets of number is a great way to start. One day in class we were talking about the Part, Part, whole model and that it is difficult for students to understand Part, Part Whole so I made a visual to help my students.

I had an Ah Hah movement when I was in Wal-Mart yesterday and found a good find.

I went home and monogrammed them so that I can use them in small groups or centers.

Daily 5 Book Study

Work on Writing:
Last year I implemented Daily 5 in my Kindergarten class and now I am moving to 1st grade so I am not sure how my work on writing will be this year. I can see it will be a fun colorful center. I will allow my students to use color pencils, markers, crayons and special stickers. I also usually have different pictures at my writing center if they get stuck on what to write about. I allow them to do free writing when they are at the writing center. I usually will make them a writing journal book just for the writing center. For holidays I will have some fun writing about the holiday that is coming up.

Word Work
My students love Word Work and get excited every time they go there. When they are at Word Work they are working on that weeks spelling words. There are many different ways they can practice their spelling words. They can roll the word out in play dough, stamp the word, write the word fancy, write the word rainbow style, and they can use magnets to make their word. When they are finish at this center they can play literacy games that I make up with the sounds we are working on.
Here is a cute worksheet that Mel-D Seusstastic
